Combining responsiveness and durability in liquid crystal-functionalised electrospun fibres with crosslinked sheath

چکیده
Responsive functional composite fibre mats that are mechanically stable and impervious to water exposure produced by coaxial electrospinning of thermotropic liquid crystal (LC) core inside a water-based solution poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) forming the sheath. Because LCs usually cannot be spun solutions due excessive interfacial tension ?, n enabling step is addition ethanol or dioxane LC as co-solvent compatible with both sheath fluids. This reduces ? sufficiently jet spinning possible. After spinning, thermal cross-linking PVA+PAA yields LC-functionalised fibres can manipulated hand remain intact even upon full immersion in water. The retains its behaviour, nematics showing well-aligned birefringence transitioning isotropic heating above clearing point, cholesterics selective reflection which enhanced removal scattering. Our results pave way producing responsive using durable polymer sheaths, thereby numerous innovative applications wearable technology, they also open new opportunities study confinement, without visible impact container walls.

Liquid Crystal Functionalization of Electrospun Polymer Fibers
A recently introduced new branch of applied polymer science is the production of highly functional and responsive fiber mats by means of electrospinning polymers that include liquid crystals. The liquid crystal, which provides the responsiveness, is most often contained inside fibers of core-sheath geometry, produced via coaxial electrospinning, but it may also be inherent to the polymer itself...
متن کاملElectrospun Composite Liquid Crystal Elastomer Fibers
We present a robust method to prepare thin oriented nematic liquid crystalline elastomer-polymer (LCE-polymer) core-sheath fibers. An electrospinning setup is utilized to spin a single solution of photo-crosslinkable low molecular weight reactive mesogens and a support polymer to form the coaxial LCE-polymer fibers, where the support polymer forms the sheath via in situ phase separation as the ...

Topological binding and elastic interactions of microspheres and fibres in a nematic liquid crystal.
We present a detailed analysis of topological binding and elastic interactions between a long, and micrometer-diameter fiber, and a microsphere in a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal. Both objects are surface treated to produce strong perpendicular anchoring of the nematic liquid crystal. We use the opto-thermal micro-quench of the laser tweezers to produce topological defects with p...
متن کاملBiological durability and oxidative potential of man-made vitreous fibres as compared to crocidolite asbestos fibres.
In this study we investigated relationships between redox properties and biodurability of crocidolite asbestos fibres and three different man-made vitreous fibres (MMVF): traditional stone wool fibres (MMVF 21), glass fibres (MMVF 11) and refractory ceramic fibres (RCF). Each fibre type was incubated up to 22 weeks in four different incubation media: gamble solution (GS) pH 5.0 and pH 7.4, repr...
